For the second time in three races this season, the ARCA Midwest Tour saw another first-time winner Saturday night at Jefferson Speedway (WI).  Paul Shafer Jr. of Portage, Indiana had speed all day long and ran away with his first tour victory.

In practice and time trials, Shafer Jr. was the fastest car, but an invert left him to start 13th in the feature against a tough field of competitors. With five cautions and a fast car, Shafer Jr. made his way to the front and ran away from track dominator Casey Johnson during the closing stages.

“I thought we had a good car,” Johnson told Speed51.com. “I think one may have gotten away from us.”

The relief could be seen on Shafer Jr’s face in victory lane, but he remained humble throughout. When asked how he would celebrate tonight, he said, ““Oh, I don’t know.  Maybe drive back to Indiana.”

Tire management became an issue during the race, but Shafer wasn’t too concerned about the possibility of a late caution.

“At one point I thought I better back it down about 80-percent and save tires a little bit,” he said. “I watched Ty Majeski long enough and he never takes it to 80-percent, so I am just going to go, go, go.”

When the halfway mark of the race was reached, it appeared to be Dalton Zehr that would walk away from the field to win. However, just past halfway his car came to a stop with an apparent alternator issue. He mentioned an encounter earlier in the day that had him thinking while in the lead.

“We were talking today about getting a first win, and I am telling him ‘Yeah, I don’t care what you got to do to get your first win, everything is acceptable.’” Zehr discussed after the race. “Then Pauly (Shafer Jr.) was behind me, and I am thinking ‘Oh man, I am kind of regretting the words I said earlier’ but I am happy that he got the win.”

Billy Mohn, along with the winners of the first two races, Austin Nason and Andrew Morrissey, finished out the top-five.

The next ARCA Midwest Tour race is scheduled for June 30th at Rockford Speedway (IL).
