It was the Brandon Setzer show Saturday night at Orange County Speedway (NC) for the CARS Racing Tour Summer Showdown 250.  After setting fast time earlier in the day, Setzer led from the drop of the green flag until the checkers flew 125 laps later.

“The car was good, we knew it was good in practice, but we didn’t know it was that good,” said Brandon Setzer. “I was excited to get the pole, didn’t really think we had the pole car.  I knew we had a really good race car, but who could ever think lead every lap?  Never won a Super Late Model race, I’m just tickled to death.”

Setzer held off challenges from Cole Timm and Stephen Nasse on late race restarts.  On a restart on lap 92, Setzer easily pulled away from Timm to hang on to the lead and then he held off two challenges from Nasse on restarts in the final 35 laps.

“They all seemed to run me pretty clean,” said Setzer.  “Nasse ran me up the track just a little, but I mean it’s just hard racing with 30 to go so, I’m glad everyone ran me clean.  I had a blast out there and it’s always fun to be out there leading like that.”

This marks Setzer’s first ever Super Late Model win and he couldn’t be more excited to do it on a big stage like the Summer Showdown 250.

“It means a ton,” said Setzer, “It’s hard to expect to outrun the KBM cars. Cole Timm’s been awesome, all these guys, Grissom’s been tough, so it means a ton really.  I didn’t really expect to come and do this.”

And not only did Setzer capture his first Super Late Model trophy, but he did so in his sponsor’s backyard.

“I’ve got to thank Romeo Guest Construction, they’re from right here in Durham along with The Jewelry Exchange out of Hickory and the entire crew, especially my dad who works on the car most of the time.  It’s almost like a second home track to me since it’s the sponsor home track and this place is so much fun, you have so many different grooves you can race. It’s just a ton of fun.”

Nasse held off a late race charge by Cole Timm to finish second, with Timm coming home third.

The CARS Racing Tour takes to the track again August 29 at Concord Speedway.
