Setting the Stage: Rowdy Energy Series at The Bullring

The fourth round of the Rowdy Energy Super Select Series powered by Speed51 takes place on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.  The iRacing series pitting real world Late Model racers against one another heads to the virtual Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for its next chapter.

To preview this event, we set the stage with some of the storylines heading into the night’s festivities.

A Very Tight Points Battle

While it is not “real racing,” there is plenty on the line over the course of the 10-race season. Along with a season-long points fund sponsored by Rowdy Energy and PFC Brakes, the champion will receive an invitation to the Speed51 Super Select All-Star Race.

After three races, that points battle is incredibly tight. Devon Morgan currently leads the points on the strength of his season-opening win in the eRattler 250 at Lanier Raceplex.  The South Carolina racer leads Alex McCollum and Parker Retzlaff by just one point.  McCollum won the second race of the season, the Festival of Speed at virtual USA International Raceway.

In all, the top five in the points standings are within four points of one another, and only 15 points separate the top nine.

Real World Drivers Adjusting

The Rowdy Energy Super Select Series powered by Speed51 started as a series for real-world racers to scratch the competitive itch while racing is on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of those racers are either returning or making their first jump into sim racing, and struggled at first.

With a few weeks under their belt, we are starting to see many of those racers pick up speed.  Probably the most notable of these is Snowball Derby winner Travis Braden.  Braden missed the field for the eRattler250, but finished 12th last week at Lucas Oil Raceway after starting fifth.  Braden also won the Mike Swaney 57 last Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway, benefitting Ohio racer Mike Swaney’s fight with cancer.

Members of the “Select Team” of real-world competitors who also missed the field at Lanier but scored their best series finishes last week include Anthony Sergi, Sammy Smith, Greg Van Alst, Rodney Childers and Derek Griffith.

New Challengers are Approaching

Each week, new faces arrive on the scene for the Rowdy Energy Super Select Series powered by Speed51, ramping up the level of competition.  That will be no different for Saturday’s race at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Last week, Kyle Busch, founder of presenting sponsor Rowdy Energy and two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, made his series debut at Lucas Oil Raceway.  This week, a teammate of Busch’s as well as one of his Kyle Busch Motorsports drivers are among the debutants.

Denny Hamlin will make his Rowdy Energy Super Select Series debut on Saturday at Las Vegas.  The three-time Daytona 500 winner has shown speed so far during practice sessions ahead of Saturday’s race, finishing 10th in Friday’s open practice.

Another newcomer will be Raphael Lessard, who competes in the NASCAR Truck Series for KBM.  While driving Super Late Models for KBM, Lessard won the US Short Track Nationals and the Redbud 400 in 2018.  He’ll return to those Super Late Model roots Saturday night in search of another win.

Who else might show up? The only way to find out is to tune in to the Rowdy Energy Super Select Series on Speed51 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
