The opening race for the Bright House Challenge Series on Sunday afternoon at Desoto Speedway was definitely an “Icebreaker.” It was a caution filled event, which started with a field of 19 cars and only left 12 standing when the checkered flag dropped. In the end, it was veteran racer Jeff Scofield coming out on top and capturing his first win of the season.

Jesse Dutilly set fast time for the Icebreaker 100 and started on the pole. Dutilly entered the race as the defending Bright House Challenge Series and Desoto Speedway Super Late Model track champions. Starting from the pole, many expected him to continue him momentum into the 2015 season, but a late race rear end problem lead to Dutilly being black flagged.

“The quick change in the rear end exploded for some reason,” Dutilly told Speed51.com powered by JEGS. “Obviously, the car was really good. But we will be ready next time.”

Scofield started the race from the outside pole position and rubbed fenders with Dutilly throughout the race while battling for the lead.

As a result of the black flag being shown to Dutilly, Scofield inherited the lead and held off a hard charging Chris Fontaine and Joe Boyd to bring home the victory.

“I’ll take it,” said Scofield after the race. “We had a good car, especially there at the start of the race. I just wish I could have beat (Dutilly) while he was on the track. He was going to be real tough to beat, but I’ll take it.”

Fontaine held on to finish second, while Boyd captured the final podium spot on Sunday. Nick Neri and Dylan Bigley rounded out the top-five.

The Bright House Challenge Series returns to action on Saturday, April 11 at Desoto Speedway.
