Troy, Michigan — The Allstar Performance Michigan Dirt Cup Modified Tour Presented by Lane Automotive is in the midst of a well deserved break in the schedule after competing in three straight Friday nights in three weeks. A pivotal Northern Michigan invasion is coming soon and it all starts on a special Wednesday night, June 10th with the Inaugural Merritt Summer Showdown. The fast 1/4 (0.250) mile high-banked dirt oval of Merritt Speedway, located west of Houghton Lake in Lake City, Michigan will serve as hosts.
The special midweek event will see NASCAR veterans, Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace take on the MDC Tour cars and stars. Both standouts have raced all over the country competing against the best UMP DIRTcar Modified teams over the years and this time, Schrader, the 2013 Florida Speedweeks DIRTcar Nationals Champion and Wallace, the 2012 Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals Champion, will both head north and see how they stack up against the MDC Modified Tour in a grueling 40-lap main on the fast 1/4 mile.
Grandstand tickets for the Inaugural Merritt Summer Showdown will be available for purchase at the speedway ticket office on race day. In addition, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star, Matt Kenseth will be a part of a special meet and greet at the track. The paid ($50 all ages) Meet and Greet will feature a question and answer period as well as a buffet dinner. His son, Ross Kenseth, who will be competing in a Late Model that evening, will join Matt after his qualifying run while another NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star, Austin Dillon will battle against Ross Kenseth in the Late Model portion of the midweek special.
In three previous appearances at the Northern Michigan speed plant, there have been three different winners with the most recent win going to Collin Thirlby in 2014. 2013 MDC Modified Tour Champion and already a two-time event winner in 2015, David Mielke scored one of his five all-time victories at Merritt during his Championship winning season. Mark Anderson won the first ever MDC Modified Tour race in Lake City, Michigan back in 2012.
Then two days later on Friday, June 12th, the fast 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked dirt oval of Cherry Raceway, located south of Traverse City in Fife Lake, Michigan will complete the trip into the ‘great white north’. The spring months roll into the summer with the running of the American Flag Day Shootout at the Roger and Michelle Steig owned and operated facility.
The MDC Modified Tour has visited the Northwestern Michigan speed plant on five different occasions and each race has produced a different winner. In two races last season, Andy Sprague and Bob Baldwin earned the trips to victory lane while Two-Time Tour Champion, Jacob Poel scored the victory in 2013. Mielke took the checkered flag first in 2012 while Marc Kurth was the winner of the inaugural appearance by the Tour back in the inaugural season of 2011.
