Coming off a strong showing in the FASTRAK Triple Crown at Friendship Motor Speedway (NC), Nick Schlager returns home this Saturday to Toccoa Raceway (GA), seeking his first career FASTRAK Racing Series win.
Schlager currently sits second in FASTRAK Racing Series points after five races, including three-top five finishes over Memorial Day weekend at Friendship Motor Speedway.
Now, Schlager will continue his FASTRAK title pursuit at Toccoa Raceway, 30 minutes from his hometown of Lavonia, Georgia.
“I feel pretty confident because that’s really close to the house.” Schlager told Speed51. “It’s sort of a home track for us. We’ve run a lot of races there, local shows. It’s only 30 minutes from the house. I feel pretty confident, we’ve won there before and feel like we can do it again as long as we qualify well.”
Earlier this season, the FASTRAK Racing Series kicked off its season at Toccoa. Despite the home-track advantage, a mechanical issue dropped Schlager outside the top ten, relegating him to an 11thplace finish.
“We had a pretty strong run in that one but had motor troubles,” explained Schlager. “The water pump fell off, causing me to pull in. We were running fourth at the time, and could have done better if it hadn’t happened. That’s racing.”
Schlager is currently 16 points behind Carson Ferguson, the winner of the last Triple Crown race at Friendship. If Schlager is able to close that points gap, he will be able to give a partial thank-you to Mother Nature.
“We didn’t show up to Bulls Gap and fortunately it rained out,” said Schlager about a previously scheduled event at Volunteer Speedway (TN). “We’re going to try to make the rest of them for the year.
“I feel pretty good,” Schlager added about his title hopes. “We’ve changed the setup on the car. I think I’ve got it pretty comfortable, where I like it. I think we can build upon that and keep producing strong runs.”
Schlager will now set his sights on collecting the win this weekend at Toccoa, which would be his first win with the FASTRAK Racing Series and his first “major” win in a full-bodied car if he’s able to doso.
“A win would be great,” said Schlager. “Haven’t won since last year. It would keep us going, give us a little pep in our foot. That would be great.
“I’ve had a lot of big wins back when I used to race karts, but never really picked up a major win in a car,” added Schlager. “It’d be really big to win there, especially at my home track.”
