Driving north to Lee USA Speedway on Friday afternoon, Richard Savary, of Canton, Massachusetts had high hopes of winning his first career Modified feature at the 1/3-mile New Hampshire oval. Although it wasn’t easy, Savary did just that when all was said and done.
Savary fended off a hard-charging Justin Bonsignore on a late race restart and then survived a last turn, last lap tap from Bonsignore to win the Valenti Modified Racing Series Port City 100 at Lee USA Speedway (NH) on Friday night.
“I was saying on the ride up that I have been racing at Lee for a long time and in the Modified I’ve had three second-place finishes, as well as some really good runs,” Savary told Speed51.com powered by JEGS. “This is one of the few tracks in all of New England that I hadn’t won at. Now I can finally, at the end of my career, check it off.”
The win for Savary didn’t come without a little bit of drama in the closing stages of the race. Following a lap 83 restart, Long Island, New York’s Justin Bonsignore made a run for the race lead on the outside. After laps of side-by-side action with Savary, the two made slight contact when Savary washed up in turn one.
“I raced Justin hard to keep the lead,” said Savary. “Racing, I don’t think he could have beaten me but that restart gave him a great opportunity. I had to race him hard. I don’t feel as though I took him out, but I raced him hard.”
Bonsignore’s runner-up finish was his fourth in seven events thus far this season. Although he felt he did get roughed up a bit by Savary, he admitted after the race that he probably would have done the same thing if he was in Savary’s position.
“It’s nothing different than what I would have done for the win,” said Bonsignore. “It happens pretty much on a weekly basis everywhere you race. He knew I had him beat on that one restart and did what he had to do.”
Bellingham, Massachusetts’ Steve Masse, Dwight Jarvis, and defending champion Rowan Pennink completed the top-five.
The Valenti Modified Racing Series returns to action next Saturday, July 5 at Monadnock Speedway.
