WAUSAU, WI – The Ropa’s Pizza Flip Merwin Memorial presented by Pepsi hits the track at State Park Speedway this Thursday night. Each year this event stands out as one of the biggest of the year as drivers and fans remember their late friend and racer, Flip Merwin.

“It’s a race I mark on my calendar every year,” said two time Flip Merwin Memorial Race winner Mark Mackesy. “He was a very special person to many people. Only a few people in a lifetime come along that are as special as he was.”

The past two years it has been the Tim Sauter show for the Flip Merwin Memorial. Sauter won the event in 2014, on his way to sweeping the memorial races that year, and took his second straight checkered flag a year ago. So far this season his best finish at the ¼-mile track in Wausau, WI is a runner-up finish two weeks ago in the second of twin 50-lap features for ‘The Happening’.

“It’s always an honor to race in Flip’s memory,” said Sauter. “I’ll do my best to make it three in a row.”

But the hot shoe lately has been nineteen year old Natalie Decker, who has won two of the last three at State Park Speedway. Growing up in a snowmobile racing family, finding Auto Select Victory Lane this weekend would mean a lot.

“Flip was a snowmobile racer and good friend with my dad,” said Decker. “I admire all snowmobile racers, I think it’s one of the toughest sports in the world. My dad always talks so highly of Flip and how he was such a talented racer with heart and a great person. Everyone loved Flip, he brought a smile to everyone’s race trailer. This race is so special to me because it’s honoring Flip in his hometown.

There will be lots of action Thursday at State Park Speedway. Fan gates open at 4:30pm with Fred Mueller Qualifying at 6:00pm and racing at 7:00pm. There will be a special tribute to Merwin and snowmobiles on hand for fans to check out.

After the races the fun continues with Lonesome Red and Blue String playing live in the Speedway Bar.
