Bobby Santos III knew he had a fast car, but didn’t think he would be quick enough to take the pole for 67th Annual Pay Less Little 500 at Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Indiana. At the end of Pole Day, Santos realized that he would be leading the field of 33 Sprint cars to the green flag on Saturday night.
“We just had a good day, the car was solid off of the trailer,” Santos told Speed51.com powered by JEGS after the two-hour qualifying session ended. “We knew we had a good car, I honestly didn’t expect to get the pole. I knew we had a top-10 car. I am confident we will race pretty good.”
Kody Swanson and Caleb Armstrong will join Santos on the front row of the 500-lap event on Saturday night starting at 8:00pm ET.
The top-15 of the 33 starting positions was locked in during the two-hour qualifying session on Thursday. Drivers had up to three attempts to put down their best four-lap qualifying run. Santos made his pole run on his second attempt.
“The first run, we just went out there to put heat in the motor, I didn’t event do a lap,” Santos said. “This is a fun deal and it takes a lot of help of team effort to run this race. This is pretty cool.”
34 cars qualified today with Brian Gerster and Russ Gamester not making a qualifying attempt.
The rest of the field will be set during bump day on Friday from 1:30-3:30pm at Anderson Speedway. Drivers can stay with their qualifying time they set on Thursday or try to improve their position in the 16 to 33 starting spots remaining for the event.
