Matthew Nance has raced for several years with his own Dirt Late Model team, with a FASTRAK Racing Series championship to his credit in 2018. Now, Nance is behind the wheel of the Rum Runner Racing No. 2, looking to avenge a bitter defeat at Lake View Motor Speedway earlier this year.
In February, Nance was on the verge of a win with the Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series at Lake View before contact with a lapped car damaged his car, opening the door for Ross Bailes to take the win.
With confidence from that race, Nance is eager to return to Lake View and score that elusive victory.
“Last time we were there, we had a winning car until we got damage in lapped traffic,” said Nance on Speed51’s The Bullring. “That messed up our aerodynamics there at the end. I think, this time, we’ll go back with the same routine as last time. We’ll start with the same notebook as last time and see what happens from there.”
Matthew Nance began racing for Rum Runner Racing last October. He finished second in a Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series event at Lake View in February.
After several years working with Joey Coulter and Rum Runner Racing behind the scenes, Nance received the opportunity to drive the cars last October. For Nance, it was an incredible opportunity after grinding with his own team in recent years.
“I’ve been working for Joey here at Rum Runner Racing for three or four years now, doing their fab work and building their bodies. I’ve known them for three or four years. It came up there was an available seat, and I’ve been running my own Late Model stuff in my own time throughout the time I’ve been working here.
Now, after several near-misses, the onus is on Nance to score a win for the team.
We really need a win bad. We want to get at least a win, if not two, this month. That’s what we go for. We’ve got a really good notebook built and we’re getting really close to being able to make something happen. We’ve finished second, we ran top-five this past weekend, had good speed at Modoc. We just need everything to go our way one night and I think we’ll have it.
Nance hopes that elusive win can come at Lake View Motor Speedway, one of his favorite places to race.
“It’s always one of the places I like to go. I’ve always run good there and have good speed, so it helps a driver wanting to go back to a place. It’s a good atmosphere there, they’ve got great crowds every race I’ve been to. They’ve tried to help turn one and two, change the banking a little bit to help the racing a little bit. If you can get it cleaned off, you can get on the top side now.”
