Under 24 hours after a luck-changing win at Five Flags Speedway, Casey Roderick’s misfortune threatened to relapse Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway for the Pro Late Model 95-lap feature. After a solid practice session, Roderick’s car ground to a halt before he could make a qualifying run, a miss-wired ignition box being the culprit.
“Qualifying we had the issue with the ignition. I guess a wire wasn’t making good contact,” Roderick told Speed51.com. “We unplugged that stuff earlier today to weld on the car and I guess one didn’t get good contact and put us out of qualifying.”
But Roderick turned things around in the race, coming up through the field after starting in the rear, eventually running down leader Chris Davidson with 20 laps to go, surviving two late restarts and winning by over three seconds, sweeping the Gulf Coast weekend.
The weekend sweep also breaks a three-race string of bad luck for Roderick, who had suffered race-ending mechanical issues in his last three Pro Late Model starts.
“Hopefully we’ve got the monkey off our backs. Little things kept putting us out of races and being in the wrong spot at the wrong time or being in the wrong spot at the right time. It’s just been a struggle to start the year off with. Hopefully we’ve finally got that away from us. So far this weekend we’ve pulled two out of the hat.”
Now Roderick looks to extend his two-race Pro Late Model domination over to the Super Late Models, as he heads to Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville (TN) for the North-South Super Late Model Challenge, which he won in 2017.
“It feels good to win two in a row on the same weekend. We got some big races coming up like next weekend in Nashville with the Super car and I feel really good about it. Just hoping and praying for no issues.”
Chris Davidson held on to finish second with Connor Okrzesik, Kaden Honeycutt, and Dustin Smith rounding the top five.
