Rico Throws the Last Slider in Wild A-Main on Chili Bowl Night Two

January 11, 2018 • App, Archives, Dirt Cars, Region - Midwest, Top Stories

The talk throughout much of 2017 in the Midget world had circled around the style of racing that had been seen at most tracks. Dirty sliders, slamming nerf bars and aggressive driving had become the norm, to the dismay of many people. But at the end of the night on Wednesday night at the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals, the talk was about how incredible the racing was between Rico Abreu, Tyler Thomas and Kevin Thomas Jr.

The trio of drivers traded sliders galore throughout the 25-lap A-Main on Hard Rock Casino Qualifying Night in Tulsa. Abreu and Tyler Thomas threw sliders back and forth for the first half of the race before Abreu made a slider stick in turn one to take the lead on Lap 15.

300x250-51-network-2017“That’s how it’s supposed to be right there,” said Abreu over the track public address system in victory lane.  “That’s some intense s***.”

The slide jobs weren’t the only part of the race that was intense. Even after taking the lead on lap 15, he never got the chance to set his Keith Kunz Motorsports machine on cruise control as multiple cautions came out, including one for a five-car crash with two laps to go.

On every restart, Tyler Thomas took another shot at the lead, but would eventually fall into the clutches of Kevin Thomas Jr, Chris Windom and Sammy Swindell in a four-car battle for the last transfer position into Saturday’s 55-lap A-Main.

The two unrelated Thomas’, Swindell and Windom worked every inch of dirt on the ¼-mile track at the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma to keep or advance their positions.

When it was all over with, it was Abreu taking the win, followed by Tyler Thomas in second and Kevin Thomas Jr. in third in the last transfer position. Sammy Swindell finished fourth and Chris Windom finished fifth.

“I’m just pumped to be up there and transfer into the show on Saturday,” said Tyler Thomas on the RacinBoys.com live stream. “The track had lots of options tonight. I was just trying to find where my car worked the best. Rico was just a little bit better. He drove a better race.”

Abreu, a two-time winner of the Chili Bowl, told reporters before the race that his goal wasn’t a win, but instead he just wanted to lock himself into Saturday’s race.

“These are the toughest points in the week,” said Abreu on the RacinBoys.com live stream.  “We had a really solid night in our heat, qualifier and the feature.”

The 32nd Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals will continue on Thursday night with more preliminary racing action. Speed51.com will be on the ground in Tulsa, Oklahoma with live coverage of the event on our @Speed51dotcom – PFC Brakes News Feed on Twitter.

Wednesday’s PitBoxes.com Pit Crew of the Day

Each day during the 32nd Chili Bowl Nationals, PitBoxes.com will team up with Speed51.com to present the Pit Crew of the Day award.  The winner of each day will receive a $100 product certificate to use towards the purchase of a state-of-the-art pit box from PitBoxes.com.

Wednesday’s Pit Crew of the Day is the Manafort-Noffsinger team for their effort to get Brady Bacon’s car repaired and back on the race track. Bacon flipped right at the end of his A-Main qualifier and had to race his way into the A-Main through the B-Main. The crew made good enough repairs that Bacon was able to transfer into the A-Main and finish high enough to earn himself a position in Saturday’s C-Main, making Saturday a little bit easier than it looked like it would be.
