After his back-to-front win in the John Blewett III Memorial 76 at New Smyrna Speedway on Wednesday in the No. 6 Modified, and a Top 5 in his 150-mile qualifier up the road at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday, Ryan Preece kept the momentum rolling in qualifying for Friday night’s Richie Evans Memorial 100 at New Smyrna.
Preece will go for his fourth career win in the biggest crown jewel for the Tour-type Modifieds at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
But the 2013 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion will have his work cut out, as he proceeded to draw an inversion of the top 10 from qualifying.
Moving back with Preece for the start will be second-place qualifier Patrick Emerling who won the 35-Lap feature on Tuesday night, and Matt Hirschman who won the week’s second 35-lapper on Thursday after timing in third.
Ronnie Williams timed in fourth ahead of Ron Silk who rounded the Top 5. Tyler Rypkema, Jon McKennedy, and Andy Seuss were in positions seven through nine.
As a result of the inversion, tenth-place qualifier and winner on Monday night this week, Craig Lutz will start on pole. Ninth-place qualifier Stephen Kopcik will start alongside.
With Preece being a no-show at New Smyrna on Thursday, Matt Hirschman enters Friday night with an 18-point lead over Ron Silk and 28 over Patrick Emerling. Hirschman is looking for his third career World Series title, and second straight.
