Preece, who drives for JTG Daugherty Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series, is a former NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion as well as a three-time World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing champion at New Smyrna Speedway in the Tour-type Modified division.
With the NASCAR Cup Series off this weekend to celebrate Easter, Preece will return to his roots in a Modified. It will be his first race with the SMART Modified Tour, but not his first trip to South Boston. Preece won a NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour event at the 0.4-mile facility in 2015, leading 159 of the race’s 160 laps that day to score the victory over J.R. Bertuccio.
Preece has made a habit of entering Modified races when his NASCAR schedule allows. Earlier this year, Preece made the most of both, qualifying his way into the Daytona 500 before driving to New Smyrna Speedway and winning the John Blewett III Memorial from the rear of a 37-car field.
Preece also scored a win in the Islip 300 at Riverhead Speedway last November, his second win in three years in the event.
Preece joins a star-studded cast of Southern Modified standouts for Saturday’s race at South Boston. Burt and Jason Myers, Tim Brown, John Smith, Jeremy Gerstner, Brandon Ward and Brian Loftin are among the confirmed entries, as well as 2000 NASCAR Cup Series champion Bobby Labonte.
Race fans unable to attend the race at South Boston will be able to watch live on Speed51.TV. Click here to become a Speed51.TV subscriber today and watch Saturday’s race from South Boston.
