Pollard Wins on First Trip to Franklin County Speedway

For the 10th time in his illustrious career, Bubba Pollard showed up at a track for the first time and left with the trophy and first-place prize money.

This Saturday, Pollard accomplished the feat at Franklin County Speedway, taking the checkered flag in the CARS Tour’s first trip to the Callaway, Virginia bullring.  While a rain delay brought a halt to proceedings after 29 of the race’s 125 laps for two hours, it did not deter the Senoia, Georgia driver from scoring another win.

Sammy Smith took the lead on the initial start and led the first half of the race before the rain came. Tire wear wasn’t much of a factor in the CARS Tour Super Late Model debut at Franklin County, which allowed Bubba Pollard to string together a set of fast laps during the last run of the race.

“We knew we had to go, these guys were all excited to get back to it after the rain came,” Pollard told Speed51.  “We had to work quick and fast. I’ve watched videos of this place and knew it was going to be tough to pass at a place like this, so I had to take advantage on the restarts – that was key.”

While it is not uncommon to see Pollard take the win on his first trip to a track, he admitted Franklin County presented unique challenges he hadn’t faced anywhere else to date.

“This place is different, it’s unlike any other place I have been to, but our program is really good.  We showed up with a baseline setup, and the car was just fast. We didn’t get a lot of practice due to the rain, but it worked out well.

“We were fast right off the trailer, but the rain killed us from making it just a 100% tonight. We got tight towards the end. Sammy set a fast pace and is capable of it, he has such a good car.”

Sammy Smith came up one spot short in second place, but was still pleased to knock on the door of his first CARS Tour victory in his Kyle Busch Motorsports entry.

“I don’t know if I could have done anything on that last restart, he did a better job there and got me,” said Smith.  “For the last 15 laps, I feel like I may have been a little better. I just got a little loose and the lap car got in the way, but we were close.”

The next scheduled event for the CARS Tour Super Late Models is slated for September 12 at South Boston Speedway.
