It was a familiar face earning the fast qualifier award for the Super Late Model portion of CRA SpeedFest 2020, as Bubba Pollard topped the field of 27 cars with a fast time of 15.875 in qualifying. Pollard will lead an all-Peach State front two rows to the green flag later today with teenagers Corey Heim, Jake Garcia and Dawson Fletcher in tow.
Pollard was one driver who was excited to see qualifying moved to Saturday after a rain shower on Friday night, noting the track conditions normally seen at night in the region. With qualifying behind him, he is focused on scoring a second win at CRA SpeedFest.
“I was really glad they moved the qualifying, I feel like it gave everybody a better shot at it to see what you really got. The dew setting in last night was going to be tough,” Pollard told Speed51. “I feel like we’ve got a good race car. Two hundred laps is a really long time and qualifying doesn’t mean anything. We have to stay out of trouble, pit at the right time, play some strategy in there. There’s a lot of good race cars here, we’ll see what we got.”
Pollard will be aiming for his first Super Late Model win since the Speed51 Super Select back in September. With a long season ahead, Pollard hopes to use today’s race to give the team a boost going into 2020.
“We went back to baseline. I keep saying that but we have for the last two years,” he said. “We’ve just tried to make our program better over the last couple months of last year and thought we were going in the right direction but we weren’t, so we regrouped here, hopefully we can start over. We’re searching, trying to learn each and every weekend, this weekend will be a good test starting the year off. Hopefully we can get a little momentum and carry it on for the rest of the year.”
The ARCA/CRA Super Series 200-lap feature caps off the Saturday portion of CRA SpeedFest. The Bandolero and Legends Car features which will begin at approximately 1 p.m. ET on Saturday with the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour 125-lapper lapper before the main event.
