Bubba Pollard left Michigan with his first JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour win and a runner-up finish in the Battle at Berlin 251 at Berlin Raceway (MI). Normally success like this is common for the Senoia, Georgia driver, but the victory was Pollard’s first career victory outside the Southeast.
“It feels good to win a race so far from home,” said Pollard. “This place is local friendly and it’s tough to run with these guys and beat them. So to get a second and a win is a great weekend for us.”
The victory was extra special for Pollard who with the win reached the mark of 75 Late Model wins in races of 100 laps or more.
“We have a good group of guys that have worked on this car along the way,” said Pollard. “Some have been here since day one, some have gone on to other things and others have been on board recently. Good people the right engines with Hamner and Chassis (GARC) makes this easier, but it’s still a cool accomplishment.”
On Friday night Pollard scored that victory in his first JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour win at Berlin. Pollard took the lead with 15 laps to go and never looked back.
“The car turned really well on Friday night,” said Pollard. “It was so good we had thought about running it on Saturday and then we ended up having to after our Super Late Model had some issues.”
Pollard got just a few laps of practice in the Pro Late Model that had won on Friday before qualifying on Saturday.
“I say this now after the race, but I wish we had more time to work on the car,” explained Pollard. “Perhaps we would have just dialed the car out. It all worked out. The car was good when we had long runs, but right of restarts it was tricky.”
Pollard’s team put himself in a position to win, only to lose the lead on the final restart to defending race winner Johnny VanDoorn.
“We didn’t need that last caution, but to get a second with, in all purposes, a backup car is pretty amazing. The Berlin staff did a great job in paying a big purse to make it worth wild for us to be here. Eight grand for second is cool.”
Pollard will be back in action this weekend on Friday, July 25th at Five Flags Speedway (FL) for the Gulf Coast Championship Series and the Southern Super Series. The doubleheader weekend concludes on Saturday July 26th at Mobile.
