Barre, Vt. — Barre’s Christopher Pelkey came out on top of a classic battle with fellow hometown driver Cody Blake to win the Thunder Road Late Model feature at WDEV Radio/Calkins Portable Toilets Night on Thursday, August 20. It was the first career Late Model victory for the defending Rookie of the Year.

Pelkey originally got underneath polesitter Shawn Fleury to take the lead on lap 19 of the 50-lap event. Blake then drove around the outside to assume the top spot on lap 28, but the race’s lone caution with 14 laps to go for Eric Badore’s spin put the two side-by-side on the restart.

A back-and-forth duel ensued with the pair swapping the lead five times over the next eight circuits. Pelkey put the nose up for good with six laps remaining and beat Blake to the line by half a car length for the win.

Danville’s Tyler Cahoon followed them across in third while Fleury took fourth. Kyle Pembroke, point leader Bobby Therrien, Trampas Demers, Marcel J. Gravel, Eric Chase, and Darrell Morin rounded out the top-10.

Waterbury Center’s Jason Woodard grabbed his third win of the season in the Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tiger feature. Woodard started ninth and came flying up the outside in the second half of the 40-lap event, taking the lead from Hinesburg’s Trevor Lyman with seven laps to go and pulling away for the victory.

Lyman finished second while rookie Jamon Perry of Hardwick stole third from point leader Brendan Moodie at the line. Dwayne Lanphear, Joe Steffen, Jaden Perry, Robert Gordon, Mike Martin, and Jason Pelkey completed the top-10. Woodard unofficially cut Moodie’s lead in the standings to just seven points.

Waitfield’s Kevin Streeter reigned supreme for the fourth time this season in the Allen Lumber Street Stocks. Street worked his way to the point on lap eight of the 25-lap feature and held on through a pair of restarts for the victory.

Waterbury Center’s Kelsea Woodard finished a career-best second while Hinesburg’s Cooper Bouchard came home third to unofficially take over the point lead. Jamie Davis, Dean Switser Jr., Matthew Smith, Gary Mullen, Logan Powers, Reilly Lanphear, and Peyton Lanphear also earned top-10 finishes.

Wolcott’s Issac Spaulding was the victor in the Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors. Spaulding darted to the lead on the opening circuit of the 20-lap event and was never challenged en route to his first career win.

Northfield’s James Dopp took second followed by Barre’s Jeffrey Martin in third. Benjamin Ashford, Dylan Duffy, Nathan Woodworth, Andrew Hill, Trevor Rossi, Jared Blakely, and Doug Duffy Jr. finished fourth through 10th.

Hinesburg’s Bobby Therrien was the winner in the annual Port-a-Potty Grand Prix. Morrisville’s Brandon Lanphear received the Golden Plunger Award for best-looking port-a-let.

Thunder Road returns to action this Sunday, August 6 with the 33rd Annual M&M Beverage Enduro 200. “The People’s Race” will see scores of amateur racers take to the Barre high banks with $3,000 going to the winner. The $500-to-win Brian Perry & Sons Construction Street Stock Special will also be on the card. The pits open at 2:00pm while the front gates open at 3:00pm.
