Patience Pays Off for Young Gun at Ace Speedway

Patience paid off for Ryan Millington, as the Statesville, North Carolina racer bided his time before passing Jason York with ten laps remaining to win the Late Model Stock feature at Ace Speedway (NC) Friday.

Millington started on the pole for the 100-lap feature, but faded into the field during the opening stages. York jumped out to the lead, setting a torrid pace at the front of the pack.

However, that hot start soon led to even hotter brakes for the “Reidsville Rocket,” and in the second half of the race Millington drew back within striking distance.  With ten laps to go, the fading brakes proved too much to handle, and Millington took the top spot from York before cruising to the $5,000 victory.

“Tonight, we had a really good car,” said Millington in victory lane.  “We made some changes after qualifying.  I rode until about 60 laps in, then put some pressure on Jason [York].  Decided to make the pass with about ten to go, and that’s all it was.

“Managing the brakes here is a big thing,” Millington added.  “You do that properly, you’ll always be right up there at the end.”

For York, the brakes issue is a recurring one even at this early stage of the 2019 season at Ace Speedway.

“We’ve got to do something about brakes,” said York.  “The last race, we finished third and we lost brakes.  We lost them again tonight.  The car was great until we lost brakes.  I couldn’t get the car down to the bottom.

“Second place ain’t bad, I’m not mad about that,” York added. “We’ll get these brakes figured out and we’ll be there.”

Another local standout, R.D. Smith, rounded out the podium, also citing some brake struggles over the course of the 100-lap feature.

“Brakes went away about 40 laps from the end,” said Smith.  “When Millington got to me, I let him go to try and let them cool off.  I tried to make one last run, just didn’t have anything for them.”

Ace Speedway will return to action on May 31st, headlined by another 100-lap feature for Late Model Stock Cars.  Limited Late Models, Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Xtremes and Bandoleros.
