Pair of South Carolina Race Tracks Preparing to Race

Editor’s Note: Since the publication of this story, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has issued a mandate banning large gatherings of 50 or more people.  Since then, Lake View Motor Speedway has cancelled its racing program for Saturday, March 21, and Cherokee Speedway has acknowledged the executive order and stated it will “open the gates and race when we are allowed.”

While many short track racing events have been postponed or canceled in light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, some are proceeding as planned.  A pair of dirt track events are continuing as scheduled in the Palmetto State of South Carolina.

Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, South Carolina is currently planning to have a two-day event, headlined by the Sport Compact Dirt Racing Association (SCDRA).  SCDRA competitors will qualify on Friday, March 20 before contesting a $5,000-to-win feature on Saturday, March 21.

Joining the SCDRA front-wheel-drive cars in action at Cherokee Saturday are Super Sportsman, Thunder Bomber, Stock 4, Young Guns and 602 Open Wheel Modified classes.

Further east, Lake View Motor Speedway is preparing to kick off its 40thAnniversary season on Saturday.  Their racing program includes Late Models, as well as feature races for Super Street, 602 Modifieds, Street Stocks and Sport Compacts.

Many events around the country have been postponed or cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. The majority of those events have been prohibited by bans on large gatherings which vary from state to state.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has encouraged public gatherings be limited to 100 people or less, but has not issued a mandate on that request.

While Lake View is looking to start its 2020 season this weekend, Cherokee has been in action since January.  Speed51 has been on hand twice already in March at “The Place Your Mama Warned You About,” with March Madness as well as the Maxxis Karting Winter Nationals.

Highlights from March Madness can be found by visiting the Speed51 Network, along with a recap of the event and more.  Fans can also find highlights from the Winter Nationals on the Speed51.  In all, over 4,000 racing videos and hundreds of full broadcast replays can be viewed with a monthly or yearly subscription.
