Irwindale, Calif. – The NASCAR Home Track event was billed as an “A Fireworks 5th of July” and the racing, as well as the spectacular fireworks show that followed the night’s on track competition, both lived up to their billing on Saturday. An enthusiastic, near-sell-out crowd in full holiday mode and numbering 6,290 strong, was on hand to see six very hotly-contested races for four divisions of fast Irwindale racing machines.
Leading off the late news for the night: it was another one of those “first-ever” evenings at the Speedway when Toni McCray “did the double” winning both of the night’s 30-lap Lucas Oil Late Model races in convincing fashion and, in doing so, becoming the first woman to win two races at a single event at Irwindale. As she crossed the finish line to take the evening’s final race (and set that new mark), the entire crowd was on its feet, yelling and waving in a salute to the winning driver who calls Highland, California home.
And, a first time third place finish for young Laci Price in the Irwindale Race Trucks was also robustly-cheered by the packed Speedway stands. The popular rookie driver from Bellflower was all smiles on the victory podium and very much looking forward to her team’s next IRT race.
Both of the two above very quick young women are second-generation racers and, as noted, great crowd favorites.
Ken Michaelian, from Lawndale, won the first edition of a new Irwindale on-track attraction, the Super Gen Trophy Dash, six race cars, six laps, and $150 of Super Gen’s cold cash in the pay envelope for the winner. The division that will run the 6×6 SGTD each time will change at each of the remaining 2014 NASCAR events at Irwindale.
Brent Scheidemantle from Alta Loma added 50 points to his 2014 series lead in the Legend Cars division and Long Beach’s Zak Green did the same in the Super Stocks. In the Irwindale Race Trucks, fast qualifier, Joey Licata, Jr. had a good run to the checkered flag out front of the pack by almost 4 seconds when the checkered flag flew in the IRT’s 40-lap main.
