Over 220 Outlaw Winged Drivers Begin Search for Golden Driller

The Outlaw Winged class hit the track for the first time for the 35th Annual Tulsa Shootout with twenty-five heat races to set lineups for Friday night’s qualifiers and D and C-Mains. Nearly 230 drivers made the trip to Oklahoma in search for the Golden Driller that awaits the winner of Saturday night’s A-Main.

The night saw four drivers charge from fifth to a heat race win, racking up a lot of points in the passing points format. Arkansas driver Noah Burlison was the first to do so in Heat #14, receiving help along the way when a bad start allowed him to jump into the second row before a lap was complete.

“It feels pretty damn cool to win a heat race at the Tulsa Shootout,” Burlison said on the Racinboys.com broadcast. “This is my second race in the past year and a half and this is a new motor to us, we’re trying out a new shock package. This means a lot. We just got to keep this thing a bullet like it is and hopefully we can keep the momentum rolling this week.”

Corey Day was the next to pull off the feat, doing it in Heat #17. The California driver accomplished it in the same fashion Burlison had done earlier, using a false start at the beginning to move up a row.

“It was good, a couple people fouled out on the first couple start so we got a clean lane on the top,” Day said. “I think we left them, I’m not really sure how far of a gap we had.”

Another California driver pulled off a fifth to first run in the next heat race when Troy Morris worked his way through the field. After what had been a trying Tulsa Shootout week to that point, he was ecstatic to see his luck turn.

“Oh man, it feels absolutely, absolutely outstanding. We’ve had a tough week so far,” Morris stated. “We’ve only made one qualifier and got taken out once and spun myself out once, made a mistake. God is really good, he’s let us come back and get this one.”

Oklahoma’s own Jonathan Beason had the most arduous journey to his win in Heat #20. The 2016 Stock Non-Wing Tulsa Shootout champion started fifth but had to go to the tail after officials deemed he took part in a caution at the onset of the race. He then torched through the field for the win.

“The car was great. I don’t think I should’ve had to go to the back, the guy’s chain fell off so I had nothing to do with turning him around,” Beason said. “We came back from that and the car was fast as hell.”
