PETERBOROUGH – OSCAAR Racing is excited to announce its new Race for the Cup championship format for the 2016 season. The new format will bring the championship chase down to the final feature race of the year at the 24th Autumn Colours Classic at Peterborough Speedway on October 7-9 for all four OSCAAR Racing divisions.

“This new format will keep drivers, fans and sponsors on the edge of their seat to the end of the season,” said OSCAAR President Dave Gainforth. “The championship won’t be decided in any division until the final lap at the Autumn Colours Classic next October.”

OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Models

The OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Models nine-race schedule will be divided in to two sections: a six-race qualification period followed by the three-race Race for the Cup. Following the August 6 Don Biederman Memorial at Flamboro Speedway, the top six drivers in OSCAAR Outlaw points will contend for the Race for the Cup. Adding to the drama, the winner of the Chase for the Colours event at Peterborough Speedway on July 30 is guaranteed one of the six contending spots in the Race for the Cup, regardless of their position in the standings.

To be eligible for the Race for the Cup, drivers must maintain 100% attendance at OSCAAR events. If a driver does not meet eligibility requirements, the position will be awarded to the next eligible driver.

The contending drivers will see their points reset equally for each round of the Race for the Cup. The lowest contending driver in points following the August 27 race at Sauble Speedway will be eliminated from contention. The two lowest remaining drivers following the September 3 race at Peterborough Speedway will also be eliminated.

The remaining three drivers will battle in the Race for the Cup finale at Peterborough Speedway’s 24th annual Autumn Colours Classic on October 7-9 and are guaranteed to start fourth, fifth, and sixth. The driver who accumulates the most heat race points during Autumn Colours weekend will earn the fourth starting spot and so on. The top finisher of the three contenders in the final race will be declared the 2016 OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model champion.

OSCAAR Modifieds and Midgets

The OSCAAR Modifieds and Midget championships will follow the same format, with slight variations based on the two series’ 14-race schedules. OSCAAR Modified drivers will have a 10-race qualification period, ending with the August 19 race scheduled for Delaware Speedway. The OSCAAR Midget qualification period will end following the August 20 event at Grand Bend Speedway. The top eight drivers in points in each division, or the top seven drivers plus the Chase for the Colours winner, will be eligible for the Race for the Cup. Points will be reset equally for the eight drivers prior to each round of the Race for the Cup.

To be eligible for the Race for the Cup, drivers must maintain 90% attendance at OSCAAR events. If a driver does not meet eligibility requirements, the position will be awarded to the next eligible driver.

The OSCAAR Modified and Midget Race for the Cup will be four races in length. The lowest driver in points will be eliminated following the August 27 race at Sauble Speedway, and the lowest two remaining drivers will be eliminated follow races at Full Throttle Speedway on September 10 and Flamboro Speedway’s Oktoberfest on October 1-2.

The final three drivers will be set for the final championship showdown at the Autumn Colours Classic on October 7-9. The three remaining drivers are guaranteed to start fourth, fifth, and sixth. The driver who accumulates the most heat race points during Autumn Colours weekend will earn the fourth starting spot and so on. The top finisher of the three contenders in the final race will be declared the 2016 OSCAAR Modified and Midget champion, respectively.

OSCAAR Pro Midgets

The inaugural season of OSCAAR Pro Midget racing will adopt the Race for the Cup format. The nine-race qualification period will end following the series’ August 20 event at Grand Bend Speedway. The series will follow the same format as the OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Models, with the top six in points advancing to the Race for the Cup, or the top five drivers plus the Chase for the Colours winner. Drivers must maintain 90% attendance at OSCAAR events to be eligible for the Race for the Cup. Points will be reset equally for the six drivers prior to each round of the Race for the Cup.

The OSCAAR Pro Midget Race for the Cup will consist of three races. The first race at Sauble Speedway on August 27 will see the lowest driver in points eliminated from contention. The next two lowest drivers will be eliminated following the September 10 visit to Full Throttle Motor Speedway before the inaugural series champion is crowned from the remaining three drivers at Peterborough Speedway’s Autumn Colours Classic on October 8. The three drivers are guaranteed to start fourth, fifth, and sixth. The driver who accumulates the most heat race points during Autumn Colours weekend will earn the fourth starting spot and so on.
