Before making the trip to Southern Illinois Raceway for the Highbanks Hustle, Ryan Timms made a detour to Millbridge Speedway (NC) for their Wednesday night program. The trip paid off for the Oklahoma racer, as he took the win in a wild Wednesday night feature.
Timms spent the first half of the 30-lap feature deadlocked in battles with the likes of Nick Drake, Tim Nye and Sam Corry. Ultimately, Nye would break away from the pack into the lead, only to flip in turns one and two.
On the restart, Timms scrapped his way to the lead, then pulled away for the victory.
“We started fifth and had a little battle there with three or four cars, three-wide, it was fun,” said Timms in victory lane. “The leader, I don’t know what happened to him, but he got over in the wall. We started battling and pulled away from there.”
Timms almost met a similar fate as Nye once up front, collecting the outside wall in turn one late in the race. Timms was able to gather the car back up and continue on, still in the lead, but it did serve to reel in the young driver.
“I didn’t know how close they were behind me, so I just drove it harder and harder. I finally drove it too hard, and eased up a little bit.”
Timms didn’t go into the night expecting a trip to Millbridge Speedway’s victory lane. However, setting fourth-fastest time in qualifying and powering to the win in his heat race set the stage for the night.
“Winning here at Millbridge, I figured we could get a top three, but I wasn’t expecting a win. I saw how fast I was compared to everyone else.”
Now, Timms will put the wing on his machine and head to the tighter, high-banked 1/8-mile Southern Illinois Raceway for the Highbanks Hustle. While the track isn’t the same and adding the wing will change the characteristics of the car, Timms is pleased to enter that event with momentum from a Millbridge win.
“That’s Outlaw Wings, so it’s a bunch of momentum there, but hopefully this win helps us with the Highbanks Hustle.”
