For much of Sunday night’s 100-lap JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour feature at Winchester Speedway it appeared that Brandon Oakley was destined to finish third, and the pursuit of his first series win would continue on another week. But with 14 laps to go the leader crashed in turn four and suddenly everything changed.
Travis Braden held almost a whole straightaway lead over the battle for second-place between Jack Smith and Oakley. Then Braden crashed. Braden was checked out in the ambulance at the track and was released.
Braden’s crash set up a late-race battle for the win between Smith and Oakley. The pair fought for quite a few laps, and even made contact, before Oakley ultimately took over the lead and went on to take the win, the first of his career in the All-Stars Tour.
“I didn’t breathe for about the last 15 laps or so,” Oakley told Speed51.com powered by JEGS. “I got underneath him and made it stick somehow and ended up with the win.”
Winning at Winchester is special for anybody, but for Oakley, his first win couldn’t be any more special.
“It’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a little boy,” he said. “I’ve been coming here since I was little. I’ve been racing here for about five or six years now. It’s awesome to finally get one.”
The Labor Day Weekend isn’t over for Oakley, even though his time at Winchester Speedway has come to an end. Oakley’s now hustling down to South Carolina to run Monday’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway with momentum on his side.
Smith finished second, followed by Dan Leeck, Phil Bozell and Colin Nickolai. Points leader Cody Coughlin finished 14th as a result of a broken right front wheel.
