Just a few weeks ago Matthew Craig earned a green jacket after winning the Masters of the Pros at Nashville, and on Saturday night Craig parked his Rowdy chassis machine in victory lane once again. This time in the CARS Tour Super Late Model feature at the historic Hickory Motor Speedway.
Craig qualified second for the feature and dominated the competition after jumping to the lead at the start of the race. Craig and the polesitter, Trevor Noles traded the top spot a few times over the first 20 laps, but after that Craig didn’t look in the mirror.
“My car was good, I was able to keep track position and stay in the lead, and ride it out until it was time to go,” Craig told Speed51. “Towards the end, my pace was starting to go away, Kodie Conner was fast and he was coming for me, but I had a big enough lead to hold him off.”
Conner struggled at beginning of the day after qualifying 10th, but was right there when it counted at the end of the night.
“That was one of my worst qualifying efforts in a long time. I was beating myself up over it.”
Connor would overcome this obstacle and finish on the podium in the second spot.
“During the race, we had the completion caution, so I knew I could take it a little easy and save my equipment. I feel like if I would have had a few more laps, I would have been up there fighting with Craig.”
After qualifying on the pole and leading laps early in the race, Trevor Noles finished third in the Donnie Wilson Motorsports car.
Another driver who struggled early in the day was Carson Kvapil, who was unable to post a lap in qualifying and was forced to start at the tail end of the field for the feature.
“I went to take off for qualifying and it all of a sudden started revving up. I knew right away it was a broken axel. So I just had to start last and change my gameplan,” Kvapil explained. “I think we had a really, really fast car. We could have easily had a top three or five car in qualifying. If we could have, it might have had a better finish.”
Kvapil overcame early troubles in qualifying and brought his car home to a fourth-place finish at Hickory Motor Speedway. Tyler Church turned in a strong showing and completed the rop five.
The next time the CARS Tour Super Late Model star will hit the track is August 22 at Orange Country Speedway in Rougemont, North Carolina.
