No Good Luck Charm Necessary for Montgomery at Cumberland

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.  Fortunately for Ryan Montgomery, he had both factors working in his favor Saturday night when the ULTIMATE Northeast Super Late Model Series visited The Greater Cumberland Raceway for the Queen City 50.

After drawing pole position following a second-place finish in the third heat race of the night, Montgomery first fended off Jared Miley early on in the 30-lap feature, before Miley’s No. 10 car slowed on the backstretch. For the remainder of the race, Montgomery’s No. 12 was shadowed by Mason Zeigler and Matt Cosner.

In the end, Montgomery kept it all behind him, winning the Queen City 50 for the second straight year.

“I should’ve started sixth, the redraw went our way after we didn’t qualify good, and we bounced back. Last time I was here, I ended up clipping the inside wall, so I was able to redeem myself, and got back to victory lane,” said Montgomery after the race.

While multiple yellow flags erased substantial gaps that Montgomery built up, it ultimately proved to be to the benefit of the of the West Virginia driver. Hindered by lapped cars just prior to halfway, Montgomery shined on restarts and enjoyed clean air out front on the short runs.

“I kept getting into those lapped cars and I was trying to figure out what I was going to do, because I was pretty much committed to one line. Luckily every time I got to the lapped cars the yellow came out. The last four laps I figured as long as I got to Turn 1 on the restart, I’m golden.”

After setting fast time in time trials and winning his heat race, things looked up for Mason Zeigler when he drew third. Ultimatley the difference came down to Montgomery having the superior car over 30 laps and an incorrect choice on tire compounds.

“Starting third, I knew he’d have to screw up to get by him. He had a good car, we were decent, I think we missed it a little bit on the tire game. But once he got out in front, he would’ve really had to screw up or get a flat. So, we were just riding, I felt the right rear tire chatter after Lap 12, we took a gamble, didn’t quite work.”

Third-place finisher Matt Cosner voiced some similar regret after the race as well.

“Our tires are bald, like Mason, I think we should’ve gone with a different tire. But, I couldn’t fire on the restarts, if we got some green runs we could’ve been a factor, but it is what it is.”
