The “Newport Nightmare” had a dream night Saturday in the National 100 at East Alabama Motor Speedway.
Jimmy Owens pocketed a $25,000 payday – $20,000 from the winner’s purse and $5,000 in lap money – in his second National 100 victory in the last four years.
According to Speed51.com media partner DirtOnDirt.com, Owens, of Newport, Tennessee, started on the pole and led all 100 laps en route to the victory in his Barry Wrighgt Race Car machine.
Owens had been piloting a Club 29 Race Car for must of recent seasons, but built up a new Barry Wright racecar from the frame-up in a week’s span.
Randy Weaver finished second, with Clint Smith, Dennis Erb, Jr. and Jason Hiett rounding out the top five.
In other National 100 action, Cory Hedgecock bested Montana Dudley for the Crate Late Model victory, while Hiett took the victory in the Limited Late Model division feature.
