The opening night DIRTcar Sportsman Modified South of the Border Showdown feature at Lake View Motor Speedway saw what the event’s title states – a showdown. After a complete restart, the 30-lap event saw action all over the race track without the interruption of a caution flag.
New York racer Nick Guererri wrestled the lead away from home track star Willie Milliken with 10 laps to go, then had to fend off several other competitors while navigating lapped traffic. He staved off a last-lap effort from Andrew Buff to score the win in the first-ever Northeast Modified race at Lake View.
“This feels pretty damn good. We’re out here freezing our a– off, my family’s watching at home, we have the most dedicated crew guys over here helping us out all week,” Guererri said on the Speed51.TV broadcast. “I really appreciate everyone getting us down here and you guys putting it on, what a race.”
Guererri took a quick liking to the facility early on during the weekend, with its resemblance to a track in his home state, Weedsport Speedway. It just so happens to be a track he struggled with until he broke through for his first Sportsman Modified win.
He used his past experience at Weedsport to help guide him through Friday night’s feature.
“We’ve got a track back home, Weedsport (Speedway). It gives me fits but we got our first win there a couple years ago and this place drives a lot like Weedsport. I just took a liking to it, it reminds me of back home.”
He also had other help with Friday night’s feature from back home. Guererri had his younger brother, Land of Legends Speedway track champion Matt Guererri, watching the broadcast and giving him pointers throughout the night.
It was his aid that helped Guererri find his way to victory lane at Lake View to kick off the weekend.
“My younger brother was on my a–. He’s back home and he was on the computer watching us. He told me to watch my line and enter like we were at Weedsport. That stuck in my head while we were out there and here we are.”
Andrew Buff was followed across the line by brother Justin Buff in third. Lake View Motor Speedway regular Willie Milliken finished fourth in his first DIRTcar Sportsman Modified start, while Ajay Potrezbowski Jr. rounded out the top-five.
