New Smyrna to Host 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Opener

One of the first pieces of the puzzle for the 2022 short track racing season was revealed on Friday afternoon. In a Facebook Live broadcast by New Smyrna Speedway, it was announced that the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will open its season at the Florida half-mile.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will open its 2022 season at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida.

Jimmy Wilson, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Race Director, and Rusty Marcus the Track Manager of New Smyrna Speedway broke the news of a 200-lap full points event for the Whelen Modified Tour which will be held on Saturday, February 12. It will on the second night of the nine-night long 56th World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing which will run February 11 – 19.

Marcus also indicated during the broadcast that there are no plans at this time to alter the five race Tour-type Modified championship of the World Series, which is currently slated to run Monday to Friday (February 14 – 18) like in recent years.

While Modifieds have been a prominent fixture at New Smyrna Speedway in February since the 1970s, the addition of a points race for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will be a first for track and tour in 2022.

Current NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour drivers such as Justin Bonsignore, Doug Coby, Ron Silk, Patrick Emerling, Jon McKennedy, Eric Goodalge, Woody Pitkat, and Anthony Nocella have competed at New Smyrna in the World Series and have race wins to their names.

Further details about the 2022 World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing are expected to be announced in the coming days.
