NJ Racer Goes Back-to-Back With Summer Showdown Win

Alex McCollum went back-to-back in major Super Late Model sim races on Speed51 with a Evergreen Speedway Showcase Series Summer Showdown 200 win at the virtual Stafford Motor Speedway Sunday night. The eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series driver led 158 of 200 laps to end Parker Retzlaff’s stronghold on Western Super Series action, just one night after scoring the Rowdy Energy Super Select Series win at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

McCollum had to run the entire second half while saving tires and fuel after pitting around lap 85, before most of the field made their stop. He admitted the pit stop was made by mistake, altering his strategy for the remainder of the race.

“I misread the rules, I thought if we got a yellow past 75 and it went green. I didn’t think there would be a yellow until 124 so I was all pumped and then he said there was a yellow at 125 and I said damn,” McCollum said on the broadcast. “I saved super hard on that long green flag run from 85 to 125, so I felt pretty good.”

McCollum will receive a real trophy from Evergreen Speedway through the mail for his efforts in the eSummer Showdown. A Legends racer in the real-life scene, it’s the first trophy he’s ever gotten for winning in the sim world.“

It feels great to race with the best short track racers on iRacing and get a win tonight. The car was fast all night on the long run. The trophy’s pretty cool, I’ve never gotten an iRacing trophy so it’s cool to add to the real-life collection.”

Ryan Kuhn slipped by Parker Retzlaff in the final laps to finish second. He was hoping on Retzlaff and McCollum getting together after the final restart so he could slip by them and steal the win, but it would not work out that way.“

That’s what I was thinking about the whole race because I knew they’ve had a few run-ins in the past. I was hoping something would happen and I could make it three-wide down low and try to get by them both,” Kuhn said. “Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.”

Retzlaff, Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway Pro Late Model driver William Hale, and APC United Late Model Series regular Treyten Lapcevich rounded out the top five.
