NC Racer Continues Lake View Dominance in ULTIMATE Opener

Dustin Mitchell and Lake View Motor Speedway have gone together quite nicely in recent weeks.  The North Carolina racer scored his third-straight win at the 4/10-mile Saturday night, this time with the ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series.

Mitchell started on the front row of the 50-lap feature and got the jump on polesitter Matthew Nance to take the lead.  He would go on to lead every lap in the feature, keeping the likes of Nance, Corey Gordon and Jeff Smith at bay.

His win with ULTIMATE matched victories with the Blue Ridge Outlaws last weekend and a local show win in March at the South Carolina facility.  It was his fourth career win with the series and first since September 2019 at Fayetteville Motor Speedway.

I knew it was all about the start.  He (Matthew Nance) took the outside and when I was on the inside I knew I had to make it work,” Mitchell said on the Speed51.TV broadcast.  “I knew it was going to be one lane out there but once I was out I wasn’t even running quarter-throttle.  I was trying to save that right rear, I felt like it was really hurting that thing.

“My stick guy on the bottom told me he was closing up on me.  I would go to about half-throttle to see if I could get away and then I’d back it back down, just making sure we would have enough at the end.”

Jeff Smith had a dismal qualifying run, but he wouldn’t let it decide the outcome of the feature.  He started back in 12th and made his way through the field before finishing second.

“Qualifying didn’t go the way we wanted it to but we were pretty good in hot laps.  I think the early number hurt us but I may have missed the line too,” said Smith.  “I knew we would have a pretty good car if we stayed out of trouble and get a couple breaks on the racetrack.  When I got into second I tried to get into conserve mode to try to have something at the end.”

Anthony Sanders, Christian Thomas and Daniel Tucker rounded out the top-five.
