The DiaEdge Carolina Midget Showdown is set for this weekend at Millbridge Speedway as the 1/6th mile will host their first-ever Midget event. Some big names have already announced their commitment to the race, with more expected to come.
While a full entry list is not available as of yet, we’ll take a look at the ten drivers Millbridge Speedway have confirmed on their social media pages.
NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott will make his Midget debut this weekend in a Midget owned by Chase Briscoe, just after finishing third in Sunday’s Snowball Derby. He will use the Carolina Midget Showdown as a tune-up before he heads to the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals on January 11-16.
His soon-to-be Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson has recently announced his entry into the Carolina Midget Showdown. His success in the 2020 season has been unmatched, with 45 wins in five different classes of cars. “Yung Money” is also a two-time winner of the Speed51 Open in Outlaw Kart competition.
Chase Briscoe will begin his offseason dirt excursion at Millbridge this weekend before joining the NASCAR Cup Series in 2021 as a rookie with Stewart-Haas Racing, while also fielding another car for Chase Elliott. The Indiana native has been a mainstay in dirt racing as an owner and a driver since making the move to NASCAR, having also fielded rides for names such as Dave Darland and Thomas Meseraull.
While he won’t be behind the wheel this weekend, Alex Bowman will be fielding a car at the Carolina Midget Showdown for 2019 USAC National Sprint champion CJ Leary. Leary has yet to win in a Midget, but it hasn’t been for a lack of effort – he was in contention to with the Junior Knepper 55 in 2018 before spinning out while battling Thomas Meseraull for the lead late.
Cannon McIntosh will be making an appearance at Millbridge, though he will be in a Midget owned by California racer Robert Dalby. The Oklahoma driver first bursted onto the scene with a Shamrock Classic win at DuQuoin in 2019 for his family-owned team, then he finished third in the Chili Bowl Nationals back in January in a Keith Kunz Motorsports-prepared Midget.
Former POWRi National Midget champion Zach Daum will make the trip from Illinois for the Midget Showdown. “The Dauminator” has had a strong 2020 across the open wheel world, having scored wins in POWRi Midgets and WAR Sprints, as well as with the MOWA Sprint Car Series in a Winged Sprint.
Four current and former local favorites will be looking to keep the trophy in the area this weekend. Nick Drake and Ethan Mitchell will return home after venturing out nationally, while 2020 Micro Sprint race winner Ryan Timms and three-time defending Open track champion Carson Kvapil leads the current home track contingent.
Race fans unable to make it to Millbridge for this weekend’s DiaEdge Carolina Midget Showdown can watch the event live on Speed51.TV.
