Brandon Morris took advantage of lapped traffic with two laps to go as he snuck by Patrick Thomas in turn one to win the 50-lap Super Stock feature during the 47th Annual Snowball Derby weekend at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.
Thomas seemed to be on cruise control to a victory but ran into a gaggle of cars coming to take the white flag. Morris found a window and passed Thomas in turn one to go on to the victory.
“I messed up on coming off of turn four and Thomas was able to get away from me,” Morris said in victory lane. “I knew my chances were slim at that time, but he was getting free off the corner and I was able to run him down. Lapped traffic played a huge part to get the win.
“I’m thankful. I’ve never won here before, and it is a great feeling. Hopefully, we will qualify into the Snowflake 100 on Saturday.”
Thomas was racing for the first time at the famous half-mile oval but came up two laps short from taking the checkered flag.
“We got into traffic and I made a bad decision, and that is what happens,” Thomas said. “I don’t have a lot of experience here. This is the first time I’ve ever showed up here. I just made a mistake. We will be back.”
Morris and Thomas put on a great show in front of a great crowd. Thomas, who was also the fast qualifier, took the lead at the green flag with Morris tucking in right behind him.
The only caution flew on lap 14 when Jason Johnson spun in turn two and collected Bill Campbell. Campbell had heavy damage after his car made contact with the inside guardrail. The red flag was waved to give officials an opportunity make repairs and clean up from the incident.
The green flag came back out and stayed green for the final 36 laps. Thomas would lead the field with Morris driving away from third place runner Dave Mader III.
Fans stayed on the edge of their seats waiting to see when Morris would make the winning move.
Morris searched different lines, but Thomas was tough to get around.
Morris thought he lost his chance for the win, as he got loose off of turn four with eight laps to go. But he was able to chase down Thomas, and with the help of lapped traffic, was able to make the winning move going into turn one with two laps to go.
Thomas tried to catch Morris on the final lap but it was Morris taking the win with Mader finishing third.
Bubba Winslow was fourth and Corbitt Moseley rounded out the top five.
