Last year, Ryan Montgomery scored a win with the ULTIMATE Northeast Super Late Model Series at Greater Cumberland Speedway. Montgomery hopes to return to victory lane at the Maryland facility Saturday, as the series returns to Cumberland for the third round of the 2020 season.
Montgomery is eager to return to the 0.522-mile oval, where he enjoyed a couple of strong runs in 2019. It’s also a venue where his father, Jeff Montgomery, competed during his own racing days, creating a family connection.
“We were pretty good there last year,” Montgomery told Speed51 “We haven’t been there this year. We won there at the end of the year last year at the ULTIMATE Northeast race. The week before that, we raced there and were pretty fast, ended up having a flat tire.
“I’m excited to go back. I love that place. My dad raced there when I was little. It’s always a good time to go somewhere your dad used to race.”
Montgomery has a pair of podium finishes with ULTIMATE Northeast in 2020, tallying finishes of second and third in two races at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex (PA) to start the year. The West Virginia racer believes the most recent race could easily have been a win if not for miscommunication with his father, offering hand signals from trackside.
“Everything going our way. Hand signals will be key. That’s what faulted us last time. We were under Angelicchio before the last caution came out. I misread what my dad was trying to tell me and went to the top on the restart. That’s what ended up costing me. If it weren’t for that, I think we would have had a shot at Angelicchio, but it just didn’t go our way.”
Through the good times and the bad, Montgomery enjoys going to the track with his father by his side. With a racing pedigree of his own, the elder Montgomery is able to assist Ryan, both with setups and with understanding the history of some of the tracks frequented by the ULTIMATE Northeast Super Late Models.
“A lot of times, you see a lot of different stuff in the seat versus someone watching you and knowing what you need to correct by watching other people you can’t see. My dad raced at Cumberland, Hagerstown, Winchester, that area back in the day. He knows what the track is going to do and, set-up wise, adjust for what I need to do as well as what the track is going to do.”
Montgomery has plenty of fans in the Cumberland, Maryland area who are excited to see “Flyin’ Ryan” make another trip to the track. He hopes to reward them with another trip to victory lane.
“It would be awesome. To go back-to-back there would be cool. I’ve had a lot of fans message me asking me to come back. I had planned to come there anyhow, but it’s cool to see the fan base in that area wanting me to come back and showing their support.”
