(Mooresville, N.C.) Mason Mitchell and Mason Mitchell Motorsports (MMM) continued their recent success in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) Friday afternoon. Mitchell captured his third runner-up finish in the last four races but more importantly captured the ARCA Racing Series points lead for the first time in his ARCA career.
“It’s difficult to swallow” Mitchell said. “It’s not often that you get a car that dominate in racing and you have to capitalize on it. I felt that the No. 66 could have gave us more room on the final restart. We’ll take second but more importantly we’ll head to Elko with the championship lead.”
Friday morning in qualifying for the Corrigan Oil 200 Mitchell turned lap of 38.393 or 187.534 MPH good enough to capture the Menards pole presented by Ansell. The pole marked Mitchell’s second in the last four races.
When the green flag waved on the eighth ARCA race of the 2014 season Mason Mitchell quickly captured the lead and built an eight car length lead before a caution on lap three for the No. 97 spinning in turn three.
When the race resumed on lap 8, Mitchell quickly pulled away from Austin Theriault and built a commanding lead before pitting out of the lead at lap 47. After the pit-stop the No. 98 returned to the track in the second position. Mitchell quickly erased the gap and recaptured the lead at lap 65.
The afternoon’s final caution waved at lap 73 for the No. 25 of Justin Boston’s engine expiring. On the final restart Mitchell battled with the No. 66 before losing the lead off of turn two. Mitchell crossed the finish line in the second position.
The No. 98 Musselman’s-Wildlife Foundation of Florida-TTS Ford led two times for 65 laps. The runner-up marked the sophomore driver’s fifth runner-up finish in the last ten race. Mitchell also pushed his streak of top-10 finishes to 17 straight races. The Iowa native leads the ARCA Racing Series point standings by 30 points over Grant Enfinger.
