This coming Sunday, August 31, Midvale Speedway will be hosting what many consider, the show of the year. The Main Event Racing Series Super Late Models will run a 75 lap event, while Open Modifieds will get their only chance at the track this season in a 40-lap grind. Street Stocks and Compacts are also on the card in addition to a huge firework display, one that may top the July 3 show.

One topic this week has been the less than favorable forecast for Sunday.   At times this week, forecasts have shown a high percentage of rain for the day. However, as of Saturday morning, the forecast has started to improve, giving officials a stronger chance of completing the event. The latest forecast models show chances of rain entering the area during the overnight hours and leaving relatively early in the day. If that is the case, the show will likely go on.

Track owner Randy Smith stated, “This is such a big show, we need to get it in on the scheduled day. There is so much that goes into preparing for an event this huge and Sunday is the best day to make it happen. We haven’t set a raindate at this point because we will do what it takes to race on Sunday.”

In July, one of the biggest fields of Outlaw Super Late Models anywhere in 2014, combined to race at Midvale Speedway. 28 drivers were pitside with 24 taking the green for the 100 lapper.   Early returns show a field in the mid 20’s for this Sunday’s show as well. The July show was a thriller, as 17-year old Alex Rosenberry outdueled veteran Jimmy Carter in a wild battle that saw plenty of side-by-side racing.

The Main Event Super Late Model qualifying session is sponsored by Ricardo’s Party Center of New Philadelphia with $200 going to the fast time award winner. More info available at

If the Super Late Models aren’t enough for you, Open Modifieds will be running their only event of the season at the track. Last year, 33 Modifieds were pitside for the show and even more have announced their intentions to race at this event. 38 drivers in built engine and crate Modifieds are expected to attend.   If conditions are right and enough Mods are in attendance, two features may be run.

The Modified division will be using Lorain, Sandusky, and Midvale rules and tires with a 50 pound weight break and 4 barrels also allowed for Midvale cars. 602 crate cars will also be running for additional bonus money. $200 will be paid to the highest finishing 602 crate car, with $100 for second, and $50 for third.

The 40-lap payout will be $1,200, 700, 600, 500, 400, 350, 300, 250, 225, and 200 to start. $100 tow money will be paid to those who attempt but don’t make the show, if a second feature isn’t run.

Two of Midvale’s weekly divisions, the J.D. Byrider Street Stocks and the Canton Auto Salvage Compacts will also be running a full program. The Mini Truck class competitors are welcome to run with the Street Stocks this week only.

Fans will be treated to a huge firework display by 10:00-10:30. The show has been spectacular the last few times and this one should be as good, if not better.

Pit gates Sunday open at 1:00, Grandstands at 2:00, with hotlaps for Main Event cars from 2:00-2:45 and 4:15-4:45. Open Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Compacts will have rotating sessions between 2:45 and 4:15. Qualifying is set for 4:45 with group qualifying for Compacts and Street Stocks followed by single car qualifying for Open Modifieds and Super Late Models. Racing action will start at 6:30.

Grandstand admission is $20 for adults and seniors with kids 6-15 getting in for $10. Pit admission is $30 for members and $35 for non members.

An additional practice is still on tap for Saturday from 4:00-8:00 with $10 pit admission. Grandstands free.
