Michigan Racer Survives Stafford for Elite Mod Triumph

Attrition and penalties would be the story of the Bottled Up Radio 100 for the Speed51 Elite Modified Tour at the virtual Stafford Motor Speedway (CT).  The lead changed several times throughout the race due to on-track incidents, with the biggest moment coming with just 18 laps to go.

Mike Christopher, Jr. moved inside Ryan Lutz for the lead in turns one and two before Max J. Cookson attempted to thread the needle three-wide.  He and Christopher tangled for the second time in the race and Christopher made heavy contact with the outside wall on the backstretch. Christopher’s chances at a win were dashed while Cookson and Lutz exited the race track after being penalized for the incident.

The late yellow opened the door for Andy Trupiano to take the lead and hold on for the win. It was the second win of the season for Trupiano, who also won the season-opener at New Smyrna Speedway.

“It was another one of those races where you just had to survive the early attrition.  I just ended up putting myself in the right spot at the right time and ended up getting the lead there,” Trupiano said on the Speed51 broadcast.”  “I kind of got a little lucky on that one but it’s really good to come away with the win tonight.”

A slick racetrack made for treacherous conditions throughout the 100-laps, with several yellows taking out top contenders early.  Even after inheriting the lead, Trupiano was careful to not cost himself the win.

“You just had to really be cautious, you had to be tender with the right foot, I couldn’t make any mistakes there,” he said.  “I tried to diamond the corner a little bit just to be smooth, hit my marks lap after lap, and keep clicking them off.”

Brandon Wilkinson finished second ahead of current points leader Gerald Campbell.  NASCAR Whelen All American Series Division III national champion Bryan Narducci worked through the field after being penalized at the halfway point while leading to finish fourth, while Johnny Thomas rounded out the top five.

The Speed51 Elite Modified Tour heads to the Midwest next Tuesday, November 12th for the #Racing4STL 100 at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.  You can watch it live on Speed51.com for free at speed51.com/elitemodifiedtour.
