Brian Campbell has been a mainstay with the Champion Racing Association ever since making his first ARCA/CRA Super Series start in 2002. He sits second in Super Series history with 29 wins and is also the all-time winningest driver in JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour history with 10 wins. The Wyoming, MI driver has accepted an invite to next weekend’s Speed51 Super Select at Lucas Oil Raceway as he looks to pull within one win of the all-time Super Series wins record held by Scott Hantz.
Campbell has already picked up one major win in 2019 at the Money in the Bank 150 at Berlin Raceway. He talked about his excitement of the Super Late Model “All-Star Race” while on The Morning Bullring Monday morning. It will be the first of two straight weekends he will be competing at the Brownsburg, IN facility, as he will also be taking part in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour event at Fall Brawl just eight days after the Super Select. It is a chance for him to compete with the top drivers in America at what he considers one of his favorite tracks.
“I can’t wait for that, we love to race at Lucas (Oil) anyways,” Campbell told Speed51.com. “It’s a fun track and one of our favorites. To be able to race under this format, it’s something different, it’s cool, I like it. Anytime we get the chance to race with the best of the best and to get invited to this deal, we’re just looking forward to it.”
He heads into the Super Select with arguably more experience at the .686 mile oval than any other driver. Campbell has eight wins in 24 starts at Lucas Oil Raceway, including in each of the last four years during Fall Brawl. He says the track can change drastically in a blink of an eye, and believes that factor combined with the talent expected for the 75-lap event takes away any advantage to be had.
“There’s a lot of people coming for that deal,” he said. That racetrack can change in an instant, if it wavers ten degrees the track’s going to pick up a half a second, it’s all about the day.”
“I remember one time we went there and we were going around there in the 23-second bracket and we were like, ‘what is going on?’ but we were fourth on the board,” he continued. “Two weeks later we came back with the JEGS car and we were running a half-second faster than we did in the Super just because the day was a lot cooler that day. It’s going to benefit somebody sometime and we’ll just have to keep up with the weather and the racetrack.”
Each invitee from the “Select Team” that accepts their invitation will receive a guaranteed starting spot in the race held Saturday, September 7. Those who accept the invitation will also receive free entry into the race and one free set of tires to use during the race.
There will also be a 50-lap race for Super Late Model drivers who don’t earn invitations to race their way into the Super Select field.
The Speed51 Super Select winner will have a chance to win a minimum of $10,000. Additional bonuses and contingency awards will be announced prior to the race.
A pair of features will be contested on September 7, one for the Super Late Models (ARCA/CRA Super Series sanctioned) and a 100-lap race for the USAC Silver Crown Series. The event is being promoted by Track Enterprises.
