Deac McCaskill had his eyes on the prize this past weekend for the CARS Tour Mid-Atlantic Classic at Orange County Speedway (NC). The Late Model Stock Car veteran out-dueled a stout field to pick up the win in front of a hometown crowd.

“Out of all the tracks the CARS Tour goes to, this is one of the ones that we have hundreds and hundreds of laps on,” McCaskill said. “It’s always awesome to be able to come back here and have such a good car that we could park it in victory lane.”

It was a familiar look, but unfamiliar number for McCaskill this past weekend. McCaskill traditionally drives car No. 08, but swapped the zero for an extra eight and competed under the JR Motorsports banner.

“Josh Berry wasn’t able to make this race because he was making his ARCA Racing Series debut at Salem, so in order for them to stay in contention for the owner’s championship and hold on to their Touring 12 eligibility, they needed to fill the spot,” McCaskill said. “They helped me out with getting to the track and with fuel and tires for the weekend and I really appreciate that from the team and was happy to be able to help them out. Hopefully this win will give them the advantage that they needed for the rest of the season.”

McCaskill started on the front row, beside polesitter Brandon Pierce, for the 100-lap race. He jumped out to an early lead over Pierce and a hard-charging Lee Pulliam. Pulliam made the pass for the lead around McCaskill on lap 40, but McCaskill kept Pulliam in striking distance. On lap 54, McCaskill cleared Pulliam to retake the lead and go on to see the checkered flag.

“Pulliam was fast and we had a battle going on there for a while,” McCaskill said. “I think Friday was the first time that he had seen this track for practice, so I think a little more experience is what got this one for us. Brandon Pierce also had a great run here and ended up second, so it’s really cool to see him learn and do well.”

The next CARS Response Energy Tour event on the schedule will be at Hickory Motor Speedway on May 5.
