In 2011, four-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion Philip Morris won some 20 Late Model Stock Car races at South Boston Speedway (VA).  That performance lit a fire under Bobby McCarty who was running Limited Late Models at the time.  He wanted to move up to be the guy to stop Morris.  Fast forward to 2016 and he’s where he wanted to be, in the top class at South Boston making a name for himself and contending for a win each week.

“The reason we come here and race is because of Philip Morris and Lee (Pulliam) and all the guys who have made the history here,” McCarty told powered by JEGS.

graphic-51-network-adLast year was when the history started as the now 23-year-old Summerfield, North Carolina driver won for the first time.  Speed51 Network camera were at the track rolling and caught all the action.

“A win is a a win on paper, but winning here at South Boston means more because of the cars that come ever week,” said McCarty.  “That first win was special because of the pressure I put on myself after our Limited success.”

It took a few years for McCarty to record his first win despite the fact that he set fast time his first time out in a Late Model Stock.

This year McCarty has already put another notch in the win column and is consistently running up front with the division’s fiercest competitors.

“We are easily a top three car every week,” explained McCarty  “When we finish we are in the top three and weekends when we get wrecked or have a problem we are running there when it happens.”

A change in affiliation has led to the white No. 6 acting more like a white rabbit and showcasing lots of speed.

“Going with Timothy Peters and Marcus Richmond has really turned our programs around,” added McCarty.  “The car is ridiculous fast right now.”

McCarty also says the success of the racing and car counts is because of the two tire rule at South Boston that allows team to race more on a budget.

If success continues for McCarty then trips to other venues will take place which could include Martinsville and maybe even some CARS Tour events.
