Wisconsin’s Sam Mayer has done his fair share of winning over the past year since he was named the 12th overall pick of the 2019 Short Track Draft. Experts in the Short Track Racing industry have taken notice.
Following a successful year that saw him win the ARCA Menards Series East Championship, as well as a hot start to the 2020 season, Mayer is now the number-one pick in the 2020 Short Track Draft.
Mayer won four races en route to the ARCA Menards Series Championship in 2019, and started 2020 by winning the season openers for both the ARCA East and West series.
Mayer joins a long list of some of the most promising stars in racing to receive the honor of number-one pick in the Short Track Draft. Two former number-one picks, Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell, currently compete in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Mayer received the honor during Speed51’s first-ever Short Track Draft Selection Show on Thursday evening, with fellow Wisconsin native – and former number one pick – Ty Majeski announcing the selection.
“It’s definitely one of the craziest things, to hear my name come up at number one. It’s really cool to have Ty announce it, another guy from Wisconsin, it’s awe-inspiring.”
Out of the 12 drivers who received first-place votes from the panel of industry experts, Mayer received the most with 13 panelists naming him their top pick. Mayer also had the most top-10 votes, giving him the highest Quality Vote rating in this year’s Draft.
“Like everyone else said, there are probably four or five drivers who could have gotten the number one spot. Hailie Deegan, Stephen Nasse, all the guys and girls in this draft are really talented.”
The top 10 picks of the 2020 Short Track Draft will be announced on Thursday night. Fans can watch the Short Track Draft Selection Show by clicking here.
