SWANSBORO, N.C. — It was a fantastic holiday weekend of racing for Tyler Matthews and the Matthews Motorsports team in his home state of North Carolina, where the Richlands native recorded a win and three podium finishes.
The weekend began on Saturday at East Carolina Motor Speedway in Robersonville, N.C., with the NASCAR Late Model Stock Series. After qualifying second – only six hundredths of a second off the leader – Matthews, the reigning North Carolina State Champion and 2015 North Carolina State Rookie of the Year, drove a solid race in the Brandon McMurray Jolly Time 200 to record a third-place finish.
Matthews then headed to a doubleheader at Carteret County Speedway, which was hosting its first-ever race under NASCAR sanctioning on Easter Sunday. Matthews maneuvered to a runner-up finish in the first race and he powered to victory in the nightcap in the NAPA Night 250.
“It was a fantastic weekend,” he said. “We had consistent speed and stayed out of trouble. This is a great way to start the year. I want to thank my parents and all my sponsors, including Marine Chevrolet Cadillac, Dorwart’s Garage, Carolina Pride Home Builders, Legal Shield Independent Associate Lashea Cavers, McCallister Precision Marketing and Twice the Ice for their support.”
