Mason Mitchell driver of the No. 98 Musselmans-Wildlife Foundation of Florida-TTS Ford would normally be disappointed with finishing second but Saturday night at the Salem Speedway in Salem Indiana that was not the case. The second year driver was satisfied despite finishing second for the sixth time this season in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. Mitchell displayed one of the most dominating performances in recent memory and at one point even lapped the entire field. Tom Hessert passed Mitchell for the lead with 12 laps remaining in the event, however Mitchell waited until the final lap to make his move. Heading into turn three Mitchell went to the inside of Hessert, the two veteran drivers made contact sending Mitchell into a spin crossing the finish line backwards.

“That was the best car I have ever had in my career” Mitchell said after the race Saturday evening. “That was good hard short track racing, I didn’t want to get into Tom again after we made initial contact. I had that happen to me earlier this season at Winchester and I didn’t want to do it to fellow competitor. I have so much respect for all of the drivers in this series. I can’t thank everyone on this MMM team enough for all of the hard work they put in every single day. We have two races left and we’re not going to give up until that checkered flag falls at Kansas.”

Mitchell qualified the No. 98 in the second position earlier in the afternoon turning in a lap time of 17.063 good enough for a speed of 117.095 MPH.

When the green flag waved on the eighteenth race of the 2014 season Mitchell quickly moved behind Ken Schrader in the second position. Mitchell grabbed the lead from Schrader on lap 44 and built a commanding lead, leading 82 of the next 83 laps. Mitchell would lap the entire field until relinquishing the lead on lap 131 to pit under the guidance of veteran crew chief Jamie Jones for four tires and fuel. The caution waved for the only time on lap 144 setting up a 50 lap sprint to the finish.

On the final restart Mitchell quickly regained the lead from Hessert, until 12 laps to go when Hessert used lapped traffic to his advantage allowing him to pass Mitchell for the top spot. Mitchell waited until the last lap to make his move in turn three where the two cars made contact sending Mitchell spinning backward across the finish line in the second position.

Mitchell led four times for a race high 127 laps. The finish marked the sixth time in 2014 that Mitchell has finished in the runner-up spot. The Iowa native also extended his ARCA Racing points lead to 50 points over Grant Enfinger with two races remaining in the 2014 season.

Next up for Mitchell and the ARCA Racing Series is the Zloop 150 at the Kentucky Speedway. The race will be live on Fox Sports 1 Friday September 19th beginning at 8:00 pm EST. Arcaracing.com will also have live timing and scoring for all on-track activity.
