Mason Mitchell driver of the Musselmans-Wildlife Foundation of Florida-TTS Ford Fusion became the first Iowa native to win the ARCA Racing Series championship presented by Menards in 40 years Friday evening by finishing fifth in the ARCA 98.9 at the Kansas Speedway. Mitchell also became the first owner and driver to win an ARCA championship since 1993 when Tim Steele won the title with his own race team.
“We set our goal at the beginning of the year to win a championship. Mitchell said after becoming the 32nd ARCA champion in the series 62 year history. “I thought that we would have some bumps along the way but we honestly didn’t. Winning the championship hasn’t set in just yet, but it will when we head back to Iowa tomorrow. The guys on this MMM team were completely dedicated 100% and they made a lot of sacrifices for this team, I can’t thank them enough for that. Ford racing made sure we had everything we needed this year to win a championship and they provided us with great horsepower all season long. Without the support of my family and friends none of this would be possible, they have supported me since the beginning of my racing career.”
Mitchell was the model of consistency during the 2014 season with his first year team earning one win, twelve top-five finishes, nineteen top-ten’s, five Menards pole awards and leading nearly 600 laps.
Mitchell’s qualifying ability allowed him to earn 125 bonus points during the course of the 2014 season. Mitchell had an average starting position of 3.7 for the 2014 season along with ten front-row starts.
“To be able to start on the front-row ten times during the season was huge for us” Mitchell stated. It allowed us to have great track position and lead laps. We took pride in our qualifying efforts all season long.”
Mitchell’s team was formed just three months prior to the season opener at the Daytona International Speedway in February.
Mitchell will travel back to West Des Moines, Iowa this weekend to prepare for a media tour that will last all week around the West Des Moines area.
