Wisconsin native Ty Majeski had just one goal entering this weekend’s 49th Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway (WI): win every Late Model and Super Late Model feature.

The Roush Fenway Racing driver took a major step towards that goal Friday night, winning the LaCrosse Late Model feature and the Super Late Model “Futures” race.

A chilly day, cool track temperatures and a determined Majeski led to the track record falling during time trials for the “Futures” race, setting the new record at 18.574 seconds. The invert left the eventual winner starting ninth in the 25-car field.

Casey Johnson started on the front row and took the lead on the opening lap, staying just ahead of Michael Sauter for most of the race. Majeski overtook Sauter for the second spot with less than 10 laps to go before a caution with just three laps remaining set up a shootout between Johnson and Majeski.

On the restart, Majeski got the jump over Johnson, but he wasn’t able to pull away. The two drivers remained in a tight battle for the last couple laps, with no clear front runner until Majeski pulled ahead off turn four on the final lap to capture his second victory of the night.

“The race is short.  It’s basically like twenty-five qualifying laps,” Majeski said. “You gotta drive the heck out of the car and fortunately we were there at the end.”

Johnson held on to cross the finish line in second but was later disqualified in post-race technical inspection along with Austin Nason. This put Michael Sauter in second, while Bryan Syer-Keske completed the podium.

The competition will only get tougher for Majeski as he looks to win more events over the next three days of Oktoberfest Race Weekend. Racing continues from LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway Friday night with the headlining “Dick Trickle 99” Memorial Race for Super Late Models.
