Eric Lee, who is normally a regular in Outlaw Late Models, took a swing at Auto City Speedway in Clio, Michigan in a rare full template bodied car and came out victorious.
Lee started from the 19th position and progressively worked his way forward, while others at the front of the field fell by the wayside.
After Chad Finley, who earlier set a new track record in qualifying, pulled an inversion of seven, Steve Dorer took advantage of his newfound front-row starting position and held an early lead. Dorer showed the way for the majority of the race and was later challenged by Finley, who worked his way back up to the front. Eventually, Finley dropped out after losing power.
Then it was Grant Quinlan who battled with Dorer for the top spot while Lee hung near the leaders. Quinlan and Dorer eventually made contact, sending both for a spin and to the rear of the field.
Then it was Dan Leeck who took over, but he was overtaken by Lee who earned his first career JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour victory.
“We’ve been having a lot of bad luck lately,” said Lee. “It’s been a roller coaster these last few weeks. We’ve had really fast cars but were unable to finish a race. To finally pull through and get a win was much needed. We tried a lot of new things and they didn’t work, we threw what we knew at it for the feature and it paid off”
Dan Leeck has not yet won a race in the 2014 season, but he leads the owners point standings over Josh Nelms, who has had sour luck the past couple weeks. Leeck went to the tail early on in the race after spinning in turn two. He pitted numerous times throughout the race. He was able to stay out of the rubble throughout the rest of the race and came home in the runner up position.
“My team never gave up,” said Leeck. “They kept telling me to bring it into the pits and they would make it better and they did. They had confidence and never gave up, they kept me calm on the radio and that’s why we finished second. We never give up.”
The next race for the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour will be at Winchester Speedway at the end August for the annual Stock Car Festival featuring all of the CRA Series divisions, including CRA Super Series, JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour, CRA Sportsman, and the CRA Street Stocks.
