Late Restart Decides Wheelman Winner at Citrus County

The Brandon Ford Wheel Man Racing Series Sportsman invaded Citrus County Speedway in Inverness, Florida Saturday night for round six of their 12-race season. After 50 laps around the ¼-mile oval, a familiar face ended up back in victory lane.

It appeared to be Mulberry, Florida’s Brandon Morris’ race to win nearing the end of the night, as the veteran racer led 43 laps in dominating style until the caution flag flew on lap 47. As the field doubled up for the restart Homosassa, Florida’s Jesse Henley got the hole shot coming off turn two as Morris’ car sputtered across the line three laps later.

“Yeah, it came down to that last restart. I was a little reluctant on how it was going to go,” Henley said in victory lane. “Previously, on all the other restarts the car just wouldn’t go. The more I think about it here, I haven’t had much time to digest it all, but I’m wondering if it was so hot that the fuel was boiling. It sounds like a lot of cars had the same issues. But I didn’t think we’d go and I just revved it up really good and cleared it out before the green and Brandon was having the same issues. Man I feel bad for him. He did a hell of a job. I hate to get one like that but it’s exciting at the same time.”

Teammate Rex Struble followed in Henley’s footsteps off the restart and get around the ailing Morris in the closing laps to finish second.

“We really needed a restart a little earlier than that,” Struble said. “The track was really hot and really slick, everybody was sliding. I think if we had a restart earlier we wouldn’t have used up the car so much and we would have been a lot better off. But it’s awesome to finish one-two with Jesse Henley here.”

Morris ended up crossing the finish line third before being disqualified on a transmission infraction in post race technical inspection.

The Brandon Ford Wheel Man Racing Series Sportsman will head back to 4-17 Southern Speedway (FL) on June 8 for round seven of the 2019 season.
