Kyle Larson added one more exciting victory to a historic 2020 season Saturday at Millbridge Speedway. Larson clinched the DIAEDGE Carolina Midget Showdown overall win by scoring the 40-lap finale to conclude the day at the Salisbury, North Carolina oval. While he led the final 25 laps, it was anything but dominant.
“Yung Money” was able to build a cushion while second-place was fought for by a rotating list of drivers that included Chase Briscoe, Cannon McIntosh, CJ Leary, Chase Elliott and Ryan Timms. A string of late-race yellows left Larson to fight off McIntosh and Briscoe in a green-white-checkered finish.
“These races are never easy to win, no matter if you have a lot of cars here or not many. That was definitely tough, Cannon was fast all race,” Larson said on the Speed51.TV broadcast. “He slid me a few times in the first half and once I got to the lead I started protecting. I feel like I could be consistent like that and still get down the straightaways okay, he was going to have to hit the top perfectly and get to my inside and slide me again.”
Larson was running a line that is not normally seen in Midget racing to keep the field at bay, similar to what a driver would run to attempt a slide job. While normally used to pass cars, Larson used the line as a defensive maneuver.
“I was just trying to aim for the openings at both ends. There’s some banking up there and you can get grip. I could just protect, I didn’t have to worry about him sliding me or getting into racing and battling, I could just be consistent that way and close any doors on entry.”
With the Carolina Midget Showdown win, Larson’s 2020 season ends with an astounding 46 wins in four different types of cars. He now turns his attention to defending his Chili Bowl triumph in January and his return to the NASCAR Cup Series with Hendrick Motorsports.
“It’s been a lot of fun for sure. It’s definitely been a crazy year. I got to race a lot of cool cars and for great owners and travel throughout the country, race in front of some amazing fans and winning a lot of races. It’s been a blast, I’m happy to close it with a win.”
McIntosh held off Briscoe to finish second. Chase Elliott and CJ Leary rounded out the top-five. Briscoe held off Larson to win the first 30-lap feature in thrilling fashion earlier in the day.
