2018 Kulwicki Driver Development Program champion Brett Yackey has become the first driver to accept an invite to compete in the inaugural Speed51 Super Select Super Late Model All-Star Race held at Lucas Oil Raceway (IN) on September 7, 2019.
As one of only a few drivers to receive an invitation at this time, the Colorado driver is hoping that the extra time will allow him to prepare for the trip out east to race with the best Super Late Model racers in North America.
“I’m really looking forward to that race,” Yackey told Speed51. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. We actually checked our schedules and both nights we’re off in Colorado so we’re going to be heading down there for that. So, that’s the plan for right now and we accepted the invite. Our season for 2018 ended really strong so when it ended we were really looking forward going to Tucson for the Chilly Willy and we kind of struggled. We know we have some work to do in order to be prepared, so we’re going to get a setup going and see what we’ve got for them come September.”
“It’s truly an honor. I hope we can go down there and prove that we are (an all-star team),” Yackey said. “That’s a lot of stiff competition. There are going to be a lot of really, really good racers there and I hope that we improve our program so that we’re good by the time September comes around.”
In addition to the competition he’ll be up against in the winner-take-all race, the chance to race around the famed Lucas Oil Raceway during Brickyard 400 Weekend will be a highlight for Yackey and his team.
“I think the culture and everything in Indianapolis is huge,” he said. “I looked at the track briefly and I saw that USAC Triple Crown cars are going to be there and that’s going to be pretty cool as well. You know, any win means a lot. Especially against the best at a very important race track. So, at the end of the day if we are able to get it done it would be huge for me and my team.”
Each invitee from the “Select Team” that accepts their invitation prior to July 1, 2019 will receive a guaranteed starting spot in the race held Saturday, September 7. Those who accept the invitation will also receive free entry into the race and one free set of tires to use during the race.
The Speed51 Super Select winner will have a chance to win a minimum of $10,000. Additional bonuses and contingency awards are to be announced prior to the race.
A pair of features will be contested on September 7, one for the Super Late Models (ARCA/CRA Super Series sanctioned) and a 100-lap race for the USAC Silver Crown Series. There will also be a 50-lap race for Super Late Model drivers to race their way into the Super Select field. The event is being promoted by Track Enterprises.
